Wot I Played / February 2023

Coming strong off Guacamelee, originally I thought this was going to be a Zelda RPG with elements of Animorphs. The Animorph transforming is there, but not the top-down dungeon gameplay. Instead, it’s character-oriented quests and challenges set in (mostly) randomly generated dungeons.

It’s definitely a change from Guacamelee, and it took a while to get in to this one. I ended up enjoying it once my inventory of characters and powers added up, allowing challenges to be completed in a huge variety of ways.

(I owned that Animorphs game on Gameboy. It was not good)

TOEM is a Scandi-made photography adventure, similar to other cute games like A Short Hike in how twee they can be (your ability to stomach that may vary).

A large amount of time is spent on completing photography challenges and quests, with the rest spent honking at seagulls.

Borrowing the dungeon and item progression of a 2D Zelda, with the storytelling and world design of Dark Souls, Death’s Door was a welcome surprise. Tight combat, plenty of secrets, and a great soundtrack. Fight like a crow!

A strange game I haven’t delved deep in to yet, but it reminds me of when I played Turok as a wee lad – the sort of game that was made during the N64/PS1 era.

A bit of jank with a lot of soul, I’ll definitely keep going with this one. If it had a fog slider, it’d be just like I’m back in the late 90s.

Is it Star Wars Souls? A Jedi Tomb Raider? Kind of both! It’s also the best Star Wars game I’ve played since Jedi Academy.

Clunky at times and desperately in need of a fast travel system, but some terribly fun lightsaber gameplay.

I’ve skated once in my life, for all of about 20 seconds. I still quite like skating games though. I remember the trailer for this led me to think it might be open world with free-flowing skating to connect levels, but that’s not the case.

It’s still a good time, just doesn’t seem to improve much more on the previous entries. Best played in short bursts IMO.
