Wot I Played / March 2023

I picked up this one in a bundle and it’s by far one of the most inventive puzzle games I’ve played. Not that I’ve played many because I generally suck at puzzle games and don’t like them much. Except Puzzle Agent – that was great.

A level in Baba gives you a set of rules, such as: Baba is You (you are Baba); Wall is Stop (you can’t move through walls); Flag is Win (touch the flag to win). You can move these rules around to create new game logic – swap Baba with Flag and suddenly Flag is You! Or Wall is You! Or Wall is Win!

In the early levels, solutions can be relatively simple. As you progress, the set of rules expands and each level becomes a playground as you combine and create your own logic with the words you have to play with.

Some levels make me ragequi-I mean, contemplate the solution offline until I return. But it’s very satisfying breaking the game after it breaks your mind. Watch the trailer!

Baba Is You on Steam

A fun reimagining of the NES version, but with some annoying modern changes. It possibly relies a bit too much on nostalgia for the series and the 8-bit original.

I had a good time going for 100% completion, although by the end of it I began to hate how every minor thing has its own cutscene.

If this new world full of modern game mechanics scares and confuses you, there’s always the original in the Disney Afternoon Collection.

Remember when Fallout 3 was meant to have 200 endings, and “that is not an exaggeration”? Well this game isn’t full of Todd Howard’s lies and actually has 100.

Playing like a side-scrolling fetch quest platformer, every possible combination of item, NPC and scenario will no doubt unlock a new ending – with a silly story continuation after each ending’s credits that has you play as a half-melted player, or your great-great-great grandson seeking revenge on a chicken. Silly stuff, but entertaining to figure out.

Reventure on Steam

Just when I think I’m learning this damn game, I die to a giant rooster.

Despite infecting half the world with Dragonrot by now, I love the fluid movement and the ability to technically be good at the game. It’s just technically I suck.

Sekiro on Steam

I picked up the bulk of DLC for Dead Cells during the latest sale and have been having a blast getting back in to it. I find it’s the right level of standard roguelite mechanics mixed with a huge arsenal of weapons and powerups.

The latest Castlevania levels are probably the best thing Konami have done lately, and they didn’t really even do anything.
